It does indeed look like an adventure film. It's nice that the two main characters really like each other

meet briefly on the train not knowing yet that they will meet later and when

the two eventually flee and of course a romance follows. Dietrich found this

at her best and Donat also does well, whom I mainly know from Hitchcock's The 39 Steps

coincidentally also a film in which Donat is constantly on the run. Although not always equally

I found it credible, a good film with a nice, smooth story.

Almost a precursor to Dr Zhivago, with a couple in love fleeing the Russian Revolution. I like Dietrich very much and Donat is an idol, but more important than those two stars is the setting, which is remarkably realistic for 1937: many crowd scenes, an enormous canvas in terms of landscapes and locations, and above all a remarkable number of scenes in which innocent citizens are put in front of a firing squad by party commissars without blinking an eye. Undoubtedly shocking at the time, and now, with all the knowledge we have of that period, it still is. Beautiful, extremely ambitious and impressive film.
