Kenau plot

Historical epic about the life of Kenau Hasselaar. During the Spanish siege of the city of Haarlem in 1572, Hasselaar led an army consisting exclusively of women. She was motivated above all by the execution of her youngest daughter and the fear that this would also happen to her other daughter.

A very nice film, you get into the story pretty quickly, the acting is pretty decent, well young girls nowadays all have that Gooise R.... and I think the execution is great. Not bored for a second, I liked Nova Zembla a lot less, and Michiel de Ruyter in comparison might be just over the top again.... Kudos to Monic Hendrickx!

Kenau

When it comes to the fantastic sets and decoration, Kenau is an absolute hit. The Netherlands of the 16th century comes to life in a wonderful way. I am a little less pleased with the script and the acting. It is war, but not for a moment do you feel the real tension that there really should be. Hendrickx is good, but Atsma is once again terrible and the foreign actors are not much better. And nobody can write normal Dutch dialogues, or does Dutch just sound wooden. I'm still undecided.

Immersive and impressive film in which I was never disturbed by what many people here found "terrible" (the Gooiser, the nudity and the sex, Barry Atsma...). Monic Hendrickx does not make it easy to empathize with her, but I see that mainly as a quality of her character, and in the end I find her very convincing. The only thing that really bothered me was the way in which the Spaniards (literally) let themselves be lured by a few naked women on the city walls, after which Kenau can sneak into the Spanish camp unnoticed (no sentries?!?) to have a stock of ammunition flying into the air – perhaps that's historically justified, but even then it seems extremely clumsy, especially since the Spanish army screaming and running towards the city walls seems to consist of no more than a small mess of irregulars[/spoiler ]. Apart from that, I thought this was a strong and fairly tight film, after The Heineken Abduction (including misplaced space) the second (and the second successful) film I've seen by this director.
