Sophie and Edmund were in love, but Edmund left when Sophie was forced by her parents to marry the wealthy Octavius. Years later, Edmund returns with William, his son. William and Sophie's daughter, Marguerite, also fall in love. Marguerite's sister, Marianne, is also in love with William. Timothy, a furniture maker, is in love with Marianne. When William accidentally kills a man, Edmund helps him escape to New Zealand. There he meets William who has run away from the Navy. Together they start a successful business. One night, when he is very drunk, William writes a letter to Octavius. He demands that he be allowed to marry his daughter. Being drunk, he accidentally asks for Marianne's hand.
