A film that made a huge impression when I first saw it. The worn game, the shiny armor, the Wagnerian theatrical. Later seen again on DVD; Takes off some shine, but doesn't affect performance. It lends itself to the current possibilities for re-filming. Only then is the temptation to add more bombast with all the CGI, while the almost stage act-like setup with changing decors gives it something mythical. Mysticism does not come from the computer. Very British too, with almost a hint of Monty Python in the person of Merlin.

Revised on DVD. This film still has a special atmosphere. Certain aspects have not withstood the test of time very well (for example why is everyone screaming all the time?), but others have (for example the gloomy atmosphere and the many surreal visual details). It is indicative of the unbalanced tone of the film. Strong and mediocre scenes alternate continuously, but the film is still entertaining. And of course Nicol Williamson's role as Merlin is still great.

What a dragon of a movie. Fine to try to tell a Wagnerian epic. But what a miserable performance! And I'm not talking about the special effects, which are just at the level of 1981. This is more like a local drama group got a big inheritance, wanted to make a movie, but got into an argument during the recording. And that screaming!

It's all not to be taken seriously. I expected to run into a Tim The Enchanter or a Gorge of Eternal Peril the whole time. The fact that they've tried to make this movie serious after being so pedanticized six years earlier is magic in itself.

The only plus is the music (even if it is started in a non-subtle way, or it doesn't really fit the scene). Purely therefore 1 * instead of 0.5 *.
