Mary (Miriam Hopkins) comes to California in 1849 to marry her betrothed after a gold discovery. But he was murdered. She joins Luis (Edward G. Robinson) and becomes the star of his club. Everything goes wrong when Jim (Joel McCrea) arrives: she falls in love with him and Luis doesn't want to see that with regret.
