I had seen Saloum a few years ago by the same director herbulot. A man with qualities who can really create an atmosphere in his films. In this film, however, he succeeds less well than in Saloum.

What I like is the premise, a film that for once does not look at the Western worldview but from the worldview of the global South. There is not nearly as much action in it as you would say based on the premise and that is a shame. It is clear that this film has much more to tell than a standard bomb movie. However, this does not come across well because of the form. The two main characters remain fairly anonymous.

What remains is a cat and mouse game that never really challenges but is interesting. Also because it takes place in places you don't know with references that are better understood by an audience from the global South. Interesting to see a film for a different target group anyway. Whites don't come off well of course but I actually found it purifying. It is an alarming film and hopefully we will enter into more dialogue with the South. These kinds of films do help to make their perspective palpable and I assume that is also the approach of this film.

Where they succeed brilliantly 3.5 stars
