Young Guns II plot

"The west just got wilder."

Billy The Kid is back on the road with his old pals Doc and Chavez and three new companions. Times have changed, however, and the peasants and landlords let the power of money speak for themselves and try to perpetuate their economic position through apparent decency and political influence. In that worldview there is no place for adventurers like Billy The Kid and his Regulator gang. The farmers perceive the unpredictable freebooters as a threat and hire Pat Garett to take them out. Emotionless, cool and only for the money, Garett goes after the gang, towards New Mexico.

Saw this on TV, too bad it's not available on DVD

Thought the first one was a bit better.

As a Bon Jovi fan I watched this movie weekly as a young teenager. I played the Young Guns soundtrack (written by Jon Bon Jovi) gray, and I suspect that's where my love for the western originates.

While the film is certainly not perfect, it remains an enjoyable ride. This is mainly due to the acting of Emilio Estevez, who is perfect as the lanky, unpredictable and sassy Billy. It is remarkable that a true story about a thief and murderer produces such an entertaining film. Because it doesn't get really exciting anywhere, it remains an old-fashioned shooting film. With electric guitars, that is.

Entertaining youth sentiment. 4*

Better than its stupid predecessor and I can easily prove that. The way Pat Garrett is deployed benefits the film. The uchronie is interesting: an old Billy the Kid tells in a long flashback that he was not actually killed by Garrett. The cast is also slightly better: away with inferior actors such as Mulroney and Siemaszko. This time Coburn, Viggo Mortensen, Christian Slater and William Petersen join the cast. Coburn doesn't have as much screen time as the rancher Chisum, but his presence in this sequel is comforting in itself. Young Guns is still not the best in the western genre, but already more the western I wanted to see.
