"What Is Real?"

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can make dreams come true. Real memories of life as a super spy is just what he needs. But when the procedure goes wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. He is chased by the police led by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) and decides to team up with a female rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to stop Cohaagen. It is no longer clear what fantasy and reality are and Quaid discovers his real identity, love and destiny.

A bit too much stupid action in such an intelligent story full of philosophical issues (in that respect the film resembles The Matrix (1999) - MovieMeter.nl[/ url]) but the film seems like a remake of the beautiful [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/88]Total Recall (1990) - MovieMeter.nl okay. In any case, the story is almost unbreakable and Dick's dystopian vision of the future, in which the distinction between illusion and reality can no longer be made, continues to fascinate.

Pretty handsome.

Especially on a visual level. I haven't seen the original of Verhoeven yet (about the only Verhoeven I really want to see) but that will come. For now I also thought it was better to start with the remake because if I see the original first I will probably find it a lesser experience.

Farrell's acting is solid, puts down quite a convincing lead. Only he gets really crappy and standard dialogues to work with. Biel is nice to see again, always like to see her again. Beckinsale falls through the basket as an action actress, unfortunately.

Visually handsome, attractive action that is sometimes nicely portrayed. Clever camera movements, which made it all a bit cooler, but that was mainly in the first part actually. Designs are nice again, decoration ok.

Almost non-stop action, which is always fun and especially in the final phase is still quite over-the-top. It just could have been a bit more over-the-top of me, then you have a really cool film. Now it's just a little too brave Hollywood blockbuster.

But the result is more than neat. The action is great, and the movie has enough pace and tension to keep it all entertaining. I enjoyed it, despite my concentrationless mood. And that's a big compliment.

Also a bonus for the scene with the spinning room without gravity. Those are really the scenes where 125 million as a budget really helped.

Very good science fiction movie. As mentioned by several people: visually the film looked very good. The new earth, technology, robots, etc. were very well shaped and displayed. The main characters played their roles at an excellent level. Regarding the plot: very original. I haven't seen the original version (1990) myself, so (fortunately) I can't compare this film to that. Anyway, just looking specifically at this remake it certainly didn't disappoint. Especially the first half I found very strong; several aspects were shrouded in mystery. The pace of the film was also fast, sometimes even a bit too fast. Anyway, all in all it was an original, sci-fi movie.

4/5
