This is a movie that makes me wonder why I actually don't like it more, because the plot is nice, the FX aren't 100% but they do their half-comedy half-pseudo-creepy job properly, Brendan Fraser is cut out for the part, Rachel Weisz is both naive and (very) sexy in perfect measure, Arnold Vosloo is appropriately scary and Kevin J. O'Connor steals the show as the cunning Beni with his nagging voice (just like in Sommers' earlier Deep rising , also such a strong and as far as I'm concerned a completely successful mix of comedy and horror). Actually the only one in the cast that disappointed me a bit was John Hannah, who was so masterful in Four weddings and a funeral but who just doesn't manage to hit the right note here. For example, The mummy is more fun than Romancing the stone and less fun than the inevitable touchstone Raiders of the last ark, but why I ended up making this sympathetic film can't close in my heart after all... hard to explain.

This is one of those movies that I bet money on that wouldn't have stood the test of time. But surprisingly, The Mummy is still a pleasing blockbuster. Falls in the same genre as Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribbean; an adventure film with humor and here and there some touches of horror. Stephen Sommers is not a man you put on a film for subtlety. The Mummy is therefore not exactly subtle, but has a nice pace and with Brendan Fraser a successful hero. The only proof you need for that is the scene where he throws a chair at Beni. Anyway, the funny bickering between the different characters - especially Fraser and O'Connor - is the most fun, along with the funny - and yes, sometimes dated - special effects. I mean, watching a rotting mummy get scared of a cat is always funny. The pace and lightheartedness make the film fly by. Still, it's always a nice feeling when favorites from your teenage years don't turn out to be extremely shitty today.

4 stars.

Friendly.

In the past, more than 20 years ago, I could enjoy the many adventure films that were made as a child. The Mummy was one of them and although it has long since become clear that it has never been original, it still manages to enjoy this casual and unabashed adventure spectacle quite well in a sense. All possible points of criticism ultimately do not (still) outweigh the adventure. The pace is quite high, the film progresses smoothly and nothing is dwelled on for too long. Brendan Fraser and co know perfectly what kind of film they ended up in and that shows. Nice product of its time and still a great snack.
