The soundtrack does indeed surpass the visuals. The story, after all, is not particularly original or special. Rob O'Neal does manage to portray a reasonably badass character as the coke dealer Priest trying to get out of the world. In typical blaxploitation style, it naturally turns out that a white man is completely in control.
Naturally, O'Neal's character breaks free from the oppression of his boss. This does result in an entertaining fight scene at the end, in which he deals with his boss and his henchmen in slight slow motion.
The soundtrack of Mayfield is frequently very prominent. Sometimes even to the extent that you hear only the music, with only the most important sounds playing alongside it. Additionally, he is briefly seen in the film when he (pretends to) play the soundtrack.
Nice to have seen once, but that's really all there is to it.

A decent film about a drug dealer who wants to pull off one last big score before quitting. You could almost call this a blaxploitation slice-of-life film. Story-wise, not much happens, but the gritty streetscape of New York comes across well (shot entirely on location). The great soundtrack is entirely by Curtis Mayfield and certainly manages to leave its mark on the film.

Essentially a big music video built around the music of Curtis Mayfield. With Super Fly, we got one of the first blaxploitation films, a genre that was delightfully raw and foul-mouthed. A year after the much better Shaft. I feel it lacks just a bit more of a story, but the atmosphere is good. And Priest can certainly carry the film.
