After say almost 10 years we had to wait for the second part of Sin City.

Of course it couldn't be more original. We get a lot of the same thing. And you have to love it because if you don't like part 1 already, this film will not appeal to you. But if you're open to the world of Sin City, it's a lot of fun. Beautiful images with great eye for detail and strikingly beautiful use of color in certain characters. The main story with Dwight and Eva is good, but I found the two parallel stories with Hartigan/Nancy and Johnny against Roark a bit less successful. I even thought the whole thing with poker and Johnny's revenge was poorly developed. Well, there is a lot to experience. Marv, Roark and Dwight are convincing characters and in terms of femme fatales, you as a viewer will not be short. Especially Eva Green steals the show with her performance. Lots of eye candy, especially Rosario Dawson as Gail and Jessica Alba as Nancy. Nice sequel, but it overwhelms a lot less than its predecessor. 7.5/10

The first Sin City will always have a special place. The only movie I've watched about 3 times in the cinema. I can still play the trailer completely in my head (with that rock-hard electric guitar), I still remember the review in my favorite weekly that described it as a 'classic born in jet black blood', the name [i ]Dwight[/i] doesn't remind me of that one from The Office or that American president, but of huge cool Clive Owen in a black leather jacket protecting the hookers in Old Town. And yes, Jessica Alba's Nancy Callahan still hangs above my teenage bed in my childhood home. No further comment on this.

So why waited so long with Sin City 2? That nagging doubt huh, it couldn't possibly be as good as part one? After all, Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy and Benicio del Toro would no longer appear. Surely the sequel shouldn't become an ugly wart on the divine body of that first part? Well, I had a look at it last night, without too much psychological assistance.

Well, it's not as good as part one. The cast is less, and while part one still spread the three stories nicely over its running time, it seems to be mainly Dwight's story that occupies the large part of the film with Levitts and Alba's stories as italics. The emphasis is more and more on the action, Bruce Willis quickly comes to get his paycheck, and it doesn't give me that blissful feeling of part one anymore. Still, I'm surprised at the low score? The fans of the first film must see enough good here, right? The style remains wonderful, and Eva Green as the lady in blue makes many hearts beat faster. As a fan of film noir, you can still indulge yourself in this city of sin, where the stories, written in red lipstick, keep that pulpy, and the loners intersect in the dark alleys. 3.5*

A typical sequel: a bit less than the predecessor and the innovativeness is gone. I still really liked this sequel. Sometimes unnecessary references to the predecessor, sometimes a repetition of moves, but still beautiful shots and good scenes.
