Ben Taylor (Robert Culp) is a failed actor who happens to overhear a phone call demanding a ransom for a kidnapped teenage girl. He sees this as an opportunity to easily get a lot of money and decides to set up an extortion together with his wife Joanne (Angie Dickinson). Using his skills to imitate someone's voice, Ben first calls the kidnapped girl's father and explains his demands regarding the ransom. He then calls the kidnappers and poses as the desperate father waiting for further instructions.
