Riley is offered a job by the NSA: a replicant (aka clone) of the killer can help him find the real killer.

After Maximum Risk, Lam and van Damme have again joined forces for this 'fine' action film Replicant.

Van Damme's acting has never been great, but in this film he acts extremely well. As a villain, he comes across as convincing. The rest of the cast also acts adequately.

The story isn't great, but it worked out well because the film offers enough entertainment and action. The fight scenes are well provided with enough fighting. The last fight scene with two Van Dammes is well captured! 3.5

Moderate intention in this Jean-Claude Van Damme film, in which he again plays a double role as in "Double Impact (1991)", which I personally more fun and better.

The story is not only bland, to be honest it also means little and therefore hardly captivated me. In any case, I thought the first three quarters of an hour was appallingly bad and you can see the good Jean-Claude Van Damme (he is the "replicant") literally and figuratively acting as a kind of mentally retarded. After that the film gets better and there is also quite a bit of action and even humor such as the scene with the beautiful street prostitute (played by Marnie Alton), where the good Jean-Claude Van Damme cums in his pants . The film also ends with that street prostitute.

In the meantime, a couple of times it comes to a confrontation between the two (the good and the bad) Jean-Claude Van Damme's, but the film ends (very predictably by the way) with a fight between the two of course. Unfortunately, that fight is not much and who wins that fight is of course easy to guess (especially with the help of detective Jake Riley). Jean-Claude Van Damme still did somewhat deservingly in his double role, but the only really good actor in this film is Michael Rooker in the role of detective Jake Riley.

No more than a mediocre intention, this bland Action / Science Fiction film and the best films Jean-Claude Van Damme made in the late 80s and early 90s.

Ringo Lam back to America.

And back to work with JCVD. The film seems to be a carbon copy of Face Off. A somewhat techy setup from which an action movie is then extracted. But Lam is clearly no Woo and his acting arsenal isn't that of Woo's American pinnacle either.

Anyone who hopes that Lam will bring an end to the old nature vs nurture debate with this clone (oh sorry, replicant) story will end up with a barren fair at home, but that is mainly his own fault. Lam is not immediately known for his highly developed storylines, but for the spectacular action.

Unfortunately, that is also a bit lacking in this film. JCVD fighting itself doesn't look very believable and the other action scenes aren't exactly of a high level either. Only then maybe the ambulance moment that stands out positively.

Acting is really lousy. JCVD is a complete idiot both as a bad guy and as a replicant, Rooker doesn't really know it either and the rest are going for bacon and beans. Story is too simple, the action is not spectacular enough and visually it is not at all worth it. Lam would simply be better off staying in Hong Kong, those trips to America seldom yield anything, this film is another soft drink.

1.5*
