Kazakhstan, 1729. The Dzungars, a barbarian Mongol tribe, have swept the steppes clean. Kazakh sultans have abandoned their people and left them to their own devices. Driven by revenge and his love for Zere, young Sartai assembles a group of immature Kazakh warriors, called 'myn bala' (thousand boys) in Kazakh. He leads his troops in a heroic battle against the Dzungars to free his country from decades of terror.
