Finally a chance to watch 2 film versions of the same story and the outcome should hardly be surprising: this American remake is 1 long attempt to do injustice to the original.

It's off to a good start. Gloria is not a modest, young woman from a Mexican deprived area because no American can identify with that. In the 2019 version, she is a hip aunt with her own car who has money for presents. So much for social engagement. The film is less than 5 minutes old when I find myself in a standard USA microwave family again.

Where the version from 2011 uses an enchanting imagery, in this version everything becomes the usual in your face hamburger. They would also surprise those Americans. Although: moments later it turns out that both Gloria and the gang leader are Americans!! It shouldn't get much crazier. And hey! the gang members have also become Americans. Not smelly, badly dressed Mexican killers, but a kind of hip, well-cut boy band. Apparently it shouldn't look too realistic and it makes the film totally unbelievable.

Gina Rodriguez tries her best, but her overacting doesn't match Stephany Sigman's beautifully subdued grief. The movie's revenge ending is a serious tribute to bad taste. Every honest, creative expression should guard against this kind of downgrading and I can imagine that Gerardo Naranjo got the stomach flu from it.

The 2011 version is an honest, social indictment of injustice and violence. The 2019 version skips the injustice and uses violence to lure people to the cinema. But it doesn't get much further than a cheap action film. Unnecessary.

Boom Boom Pow

As a 16 year old I would undoubtedly have found Miss Bala fantastic. It had all the elements I needed: a beautiful lead actress, and smart gangsters who shoot police officers with grenade launchers.

Today, however, this is no longer enough for me. Plotwise the story also has to be well put together and here it is all way too thick. This is one of those American movies that mainly takes place in another country, but where almost everyone speaks perfect English. Even when the protagonist tries to communicate with them in Spanish on several occasions. In addition, the presence of the DEA is also nice and one-dimensional and only processed in the script to further propel the plot. Because how unbelievable is it, for example, to leave an informant to her fate in the middle of a firefight?

My expectations weren't high beforehand, and I've never seen the original, so I didn't have anything to compare it to, but the remake is about what I expected. A typical American remake that seems to be quickly cobbled together to be able to earn money quickly. Sometimes you can be positively surprised and low ratings don't match your own opinion, but in this case they come pretty close. With no mind at all, this can still be somewhat enjoyable for some people, but don't start here if you're looking for some depth and credibility.

2.5*

Not bad... I haven't seen the Mexican original but I can imagine this being a glitzy, embellished remake with more emphasis on spectacle. I wouldn't write this off completely. What some people talk about when they talk about "violence" is a complete mystery to me, because the movie actually has very little action; there were some tense moments. The emphasis is on the ambiguous relationship between Gloria and the cartel leader, and it is precisely there that more could be extracted, for example a feigned romance. I think a scene where Gloria puts a chip in a random phone and discovers that the phone belongs to a young woman who she is being held hostage like her is fine. So a reasonable film, with Rodriguez who feels out of place, but could easily have been stronger.
