The strong acting of Watts and the excellent work of animal trainer Graham Ware Jr. (who used 10 different birds for the role of Penguin) keep this sentimental dragon, including a frequently recurring moody piano motif, afloat. The drama, based on true facts, concerns the Bloom family who are struggling enormously with the fact that the energetic, sporty mother Sam [Naomi Watts] has become permanently paralyzed down to her waist after a fatal accident during a holiday in Thailand. Father Cam [Andrew Lincoln] tries to keep everyone's spirits up, but Sam is extremely unhappy and eldest son Noah [Griffin Murray-Johnston] is struggling with enormous guilt. One day Noah finds an injured blackbird that can no longer fly. He can care for the animal, which is named Penguin, at home until it can fly again. You don't have to guess three times to know how this will proceed. Completely predictable valley of tears, but fortunately Rachel House brings some life into the brewery as a decisive kayak instructor.

As a children's film I thought it was still doable, the magpie was nice. And those boys were pretty funny. However, Penguin Bloom is not a children's film, but has quite a few pretensions. And then as an adult you feel like you're not being taken completely seriously.

A beautiful family story based on a true event and also some courage for anyone who finds themselves in such a situation.

Sentiment and clichés are difficult to rule out in such films and you just have to accept them. You either look at it or you just ignore it.

Anyway, Naomi Watts is good in her role.
