Roland is a scrap dealer who lives in Montreal with his wife Berthe, their two children and his shy and reclusive employee Ernest. One evening Roland's wealthy uncle Arthur pays them an unexpected visit and when it becomes clear to him that the family is struggling with financial problems, he offers them money. However, the couple complains that the money offered cannot help them sufficiently.
