I Am a Hero plot

"Welcome to ZQN World."

Hideo is a wimpy manga artist who dreams of great exploits. The poor relationship with his girlfriend deteriorates dramatically when she turns into a zombie, as does the vast majority of the Japanese population. On the way to Mount Fuji, Hideo ends up in a shopping center where the survivors are getting ready for the big stand-off.

Japanese zombies.

Quite a cool film, which unfortunately takes the wrong turn halfway through. But nothing to complain about at the beginning. Derelict manga artist gets involved in a true zombie apocalypse, the outbreak is quite impressive. One long scene in which things go from bad to worse.

The trip to Mt Fuji is also pretty cool, but once you get to the base it becomes more of a Walking Dead-like event, with the focus on a commune of survivors rather than the zombies themselves. The tempo slows down enormously and the whole middle part is too boring for a film like this.

Towards the end it picks up again, with a cool finale and quite a few cool gory moments. Also some very cool zombies, like the sumo zombie and the high jumper. Visually fine and well cared for, acting properly and the soundtrack is also nice. Typically modern with loud horns for extra effect.

Beginning and ending are more than okay, some memorable moments and nice characters, but the middle part is too slow and boring for a movie like this. Leave that kind of Walking Dead stuff for TV series that can go on for 8 seasons.

In terms of plot, this Japanese zombie film is not very surprising and certainly not innovative, but the difference is in the details. For example, the main character, a silly anti-hero, is portrayed convincingly and the zombies look very bizarre. The visual spectacle is certainly not disappointing. The many action scenes and the accompanying gory make-up effects are first class. The film is a bit too long and the plot is a bit slow at times, but the excessively extreme finale makes up for it.
