"Klytus! Are your men on the right pills? Maybe you should execute their trainer!"

It's just so weird and clumsy that it's fun again.

Sam J. Jones isn't exactly a great Flash Gordon with his bleached hair. Max von Sydow, on the other hand, is terribly good as Ming. Brian Blessed was also very good as Vultan and has some really genius sayings. Ornella Muti and Peter Wyngarde weren't bad either, but the rest of the actors were a bit disappointing.

Danilo Donati's costumes were really great and you can see that a lot of the budget went into the costumes. The sets were also very well made and you can see that a lot of work went into it. The effects weren't bad either. The painted backgrounds and such were also very well done. The scenery of Mongo and the palace of Ming were also very well made. A setback were the rather typical rockets and spaceships.

I really liked the opening title with parts from the comics. I also think that the costumes, sets and teaching have those beautiful bright colors that make the film itself look a bit like a comic book.

It is, however, occasionally very typical and childish, such as that rugby match in the castle of Ming. What's that all about?

When they die, the soldiers of Ming make a sound that reminds me a lot of the Slayers from Krull. Klytus also looks just like Lord Doom with that mask only gold. And how his eyes and tongue stick out when Flash kills him .

Queen's score is absolutely amazing. The great music can be heard throughout the film. The opening title Flash! is a great song that almost everyone knows.

A very entertaining film that is nevertheless very good.

Mad scientist Professor Zarkov kidnaps Flash Gordon and his girlfriend to take them to the planet Mongo. That planet is ruled by the evil emperor Ming (an unrecognizable Max von Sydow), who has evil plans: he wants to destroy the earth. The professor hopes Flash will help him prevent this.

Flash Gordon is a hilarious science fiction movie. I expected a ridiculously bad movie, but the movie was actually not that bad. The special effects aren't that bad, and the extravagant sets and costumes have been given a lot of attention. Queen's hysterical music tops it off.

Entertaining kitsch, let's keep it that way. 2.5*

Ming : Who are you?

Flash : Flash Gordon, quarterback, New York Jets.

The whole movie is a gimmick of course. If you don't realize that ... That Flash Gordon (or rather Sam Jones) is a ridiculous and superficial hero; one could also have taken Will Tura. Furthermore, there is only one word to describe this space opera: kitsch! And visually I didn't like it. Some scenes looked cool. I expected much worse in that regard.

Speaking of space opera, I thought Flash Gordon was more opera than space : extravagant costumes, grand sets, a super powerful enemy (though!), princes and princesses, saving the world, Queen. If you add all these things together, you arrive at a fairly successful cult film and I wouldn't dare use the word failure so quickly.
