Back in the late 90's I saw this film on I believe Canal+ (now it's Film 1). All I could remember was Dennis Rodman playing along (with a different bright color in his hair) and the ending in a Roman sports theatre. Because I've had Jean-Claude Van Damme a bit in my head the last few days, I've reviewed this film again.

In terms of story (it revolves around revenge), this action film is not very original and it is certainly not original. The story is also not really captivating, but in terms of entertainment and execution it is still a nice film to watch. Also because the pace is quite high and there is quite a lot of action in it which is sometimes quite spectacular (here and there they also stole some action from other films, such as the gun case from the previously released film "Desperado (1995)"). The film begins with a sort of James Bond-like opening and ends spectacularly in the aforementioned Roman sports theater where, among other things, a tiger is released. The cast also does a good job and Dennis Rodman playing along makes the story a bit light-hearted and he also provided some humor. The highlight of this movie was actually the final fight between Jean-Claude Van Damme and the muscular Mickey Rourke. The aforementioned Dennis Rodman also plays a role in this.

Although this is not a great film, in my opinion it has a low point here. Because I did enjoy it quite a bit and the film only lasts about 85 minutes and never really gets bored, it gets a pass from me in any case.

“Oops. Airball.”

Double Team flies in all directions and jumps from one piece to the next, but entertaining nonsense it does deliver. For a Van Damme film, the fight scenes are very mediocre, and the story isn't too special (I didn't expect that either). Only in the end with the fight between Van Damme and Rourke (and a tiger) Double Team really comes to life.

Entertaining.

Jean-Claude Van Damme shines in this incredibly wrong action print. In terms of nonsense, it's again perfectly fine, starting with the introduction to JCVD's characters. The dialogues are so ridiculous that with your eyes closed you might as well have a soft porn on. After that intro and when that damn cow is out of the way, a carousel of moderately shot action kicks in. However, the pace is perfectly fine, and the film is built up logically, with the obligatory editing scene that catches the eye. The finale is not action-wise, but like all the previous a lot of wrong things together and therefore a good ending for this quick bite.
