Crying Freeman plot

"Once in a lifetime comes the perfect killer"

When the beautiful Emu witnesses a bloody attack on a member of the Chinese mafia, the perpetrator (the Freeman) introduces himself to her. As tradition dictates, she will have to die by his hand. But when the two come face to face again, the Freeman can't bring himself to take her life. The triad he works for considers this act treason and vows revenge.

Crying Freeman is without a doubt a very neat film in terms of visual material. However, the story is quite infantile which is a shame. Could have been much more mature in that area with a little more attention, too bad!

Nice movie.

I recently watched a Hong Kong adaptation, which is a bit crazier and smoother, this one tries to be a bit more serious. Gans succeeds (only) partly in this, so that the net result is actually the same. Pretty okay, but could have easily been better. But it certainly offers entertainment.

Does indeed resemble the heroic bloodshed of a John Woo. Stylized gunfights, cool slomo, high body counts. The action scenes are really on a high level, the film also manages to look good visually from time to time. Nice camera work, great lighting and use of color.

But the acting is unfortunately a bit less. Those "Yakuza in America" films rarely compete with the local variants (the only exception may be Brother, but Kitano simply imported half his cast with regulars), here too it is disappointing. Poor acting, fairly boring interludes. It's a shame, because it often takes the momentum out of the film.

But otherwise nice entertainment, nice snack and things like that. Just had the potential to be something more.

3.0*

Boring.

Gans didn't coordinate the ingredients well in this film. In terms of look it is quite a nice 90s action movie. But in terms of acting and flow it is not very smooth. It's kind of a bouquet series story of a woman who falls in love with a hit man and vice versa. How that introduction goes between the two is laughable but Gans doesn't seem to have the humor to really see what he's up to here. He chooses an action film with bitter seriousness, which is not the wisest choice with this source material. Although the action is often a bit slow, the film is the most enjoyable there, but Gans keeps going back to the story with a rather faint mystical undertone.

2 stars.
