Bushwick plot

"Fight for your city, block by block"

The film tells the story of 20-year-old Lucy and war veteran Stupe. Texas is trying to secede from the United States and New York City is being used as a bargaining chip. Lucy meets Stupe when she gets off the subway and ends up in the military invasion of Brooklyn. Together they decide to cross the treacherous five blocks from Bushwick. However, the neighborhood is infested with looters, local militias, invading soldiers and a silly cousin. The goal is to get home safely and be reunited with Lucy's grandmother.

Solid.

So far 1 of the biggest movie puzzles in 2020 for me is the fact that this movie averages a 4.7 on MovieMeter and a 5.2 on IMDb. I see such an excess of films that are so much worse directed than Bushwick. In fact, I thought Bushwick was a solid movie compared to a lot of other movies.

The film also falls right into the house by making the introduction only about 5 minutes. From that moment on you immediately get the action/thriller that continues almost non-stop, with the exception of a few rest moments in between. But it's never boring.

A long-take approach has been chosen, and it works very well. At times it reminded me a bit of 1917. Only 1917 has more budget, a different setting and somewhat better direction. Bushwick is certainly not bad, but of course can't make it with a movie like 1917.

Camera work is very solid. Beautiful, sometimes handsome long-takes and many events that are simply well captured. It's just a pity that the directing duo can never really create any kind of tension. I think that requires a bit too much direction for that. The rawness, the tension and that last push to really make something cool out of it are unfortunately still missing.

But it is still a wonderful concept that is used well. Decent acting. Nothing special, but it doesn't bother anything. Enough action in between and enough ideas in between to keep the 94 minutes from becoming a long one. I had a good time with this.

However, the final push and the associated tension are still missing. But the pace is good, the action is well portrayed and the direction is solid. They managed to make good use of the budget. But a good surprise from a film that has a remarkably low average. A matter of taste I think.

Clearly copied from the trick that was successfully used in Cloverfield. A bunch of ordinary New York citizens suddenly confronted by an unannounced, unknown enemy. A continuous close-up camera should give the viewer the feeling of almost participating in the action, and it succeeds quite nicely. If somewhere about halfway through Bushwick the explanation for all that violence is given, the film loses a lot of power and credibility because that explanation is hilariously ill-conceived, but in the end that should not spoil the fun for the enthusiast of this skillfully made but mindless action film.

What a horrible mess.

While the city is turned upside down and people are randomly shot everywhere, the two main characters run through the streets like a headless chicken. Occasionally taking half cover, but just as often not, while a group of murderers regularly walks past. Here and there they staunch a wound and in addition they especially pant a lot. This is about 90% of what Bushwick has to offer and is brought to you through lousy acting, pathetic dialogue and a complete lack of suspense.
