Funny action piece, produced by Sam Raimi, with Bill Skarsgard as a deaf-mute avenger in a rather strange dystopian society. The cast is looking forward to it and visually the film is fine, although the bloody action scenes do not really add anything to the genre. It all looks acceptably cool, let's leave it at that. What gives the film some added value is the gimmick of the hilariously cool Mortal Kombat voiceover that Skarsgard supposedly hears in his head. There's a lot of fun to be had with that. Fatality!

As a child, Boy [Cameron/Nicholas Crovetti] had to watch passively as his sister Mina [Quinn Copley] was executed by ruler Hilda van der Koy [Famke Janssen]. He managed to escape himself and under the guidance of martial artist and public enemy number 1 Shaman [Yayan Ruhian], he prepared himself for revenge for years. And he has been deaf all his life. Now Boy [Bill Skarsgård] has grown up and become an almost unbeatable warrior. But before he can deal with Hilda, he must deal with her son [Sharlto Copley], her daughter [Michelle Dockery], her son-in-law [Brett Gelman] and a mysterious female warrior codenamed June27. Mohr and co-writers Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers cleverly deal with the fact that the narrator is deaf and with the inimitable Ruhian (The Raid, John Wick 3: Parabellum ), action fans are assured of some breathtaking fight scenes. Unfortunately, Mohr places an unnecessary amount of emphasis on the comedy, making the whole thing very tonally unbalanced.
