Hugh Jackman has been confirmed for a sensational return as Wolverine in the Marvel cinematic universe.
The actor first appeared as Logan / Wolverine in 2000's X-Men and would go on to make numerous more appearances as the character in the original X-Men trilogy as well as the prequel trilogy which included X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine came in Logan in 2017, and the character's arc and death in that movie meant that it was generally accepted that he had retired from the role.
Indeed, Jackman himself expressed apprehension about returning as Logan again.
However, he will appear as the character in Deadpool 3, as confirmed by Ryan Reynolds.
Within the first two Deadpool movies, Wade Wilson has made constant references to Wolverine, even the character's death, utilising his ability to break the fourth wall.
Reynolds and Jackman are close friends in real life and play this off as enemies, tongue-in-cheek, over social media.
On a Twitter post, Reynolds facetiously revealed that he and the writers could not come up with any special plot ideas for Deadpool 3, so they just asked Jackman to make his comeback instead.
“Hey everyone," he said.
“We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now. I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth and motivation and meaning.
"Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside, and I have nothing. Just completely empty up here and terrifying.”
Reynolds added: “But we did have one idea: Hey Hugh, do you want to play Wolverine one more time?”
Walking past the camera, Jackman responds: "Yeah, sure Ryan."
