A new trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been released, and fans have been given their first sight of who has taken up the mantle left by T'Challa.
Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, Marvel announced that they would not be recasting the role of T'Challa for any subsequent movies in the MCU.
However, in Wakanda Forever, we will still get a new Black Panther, and it appears that Shuri has donned the suit in place of her brother.
In the first movie, Shuri acted as an accomplice to T'Challa, using her genius knowledge of vibranium to build and maintain inventions, and the Black Panther suit.
Who is the villain in Black Panther?
Black Panther had one of the greatest villains in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger.
Not only was he a formidable foe up against the hero of the piece, King T'Challa, but there was a dimension to his story and personality that catalysed empathy among viewers.
For Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, there will be a completely new hero versus villain story.
The full trailer for the Black Panther sequel provided fans with a view of Namor, and he is widely believed to be the primary antagonist.
In the comics, he is the mutant son of a sea captain hailing from Atlantis who possesses superhuman powers. Also known as Sub-Mariner, he will hail from Talocan, not Atlantis, in the movie and will create friction with Wakanda after the riches of the region were revealed by Black Panther.
“The contrast between T’Challa and Namor – their characters, and their nations – just leaps off the page,” director Ryan Coogler told Empire.
“He’s a dream antagonist.”
Namor will be played by Tenoch Huerta, most famed for featuring in The Forever Purge and Tigers Are Not Afraid.
Huerta has explained some plot details for the character in Wakanda Forever, and as mentioned above, he has a quarrel with Wakanda after his civilisation is exposed.
“That decision puts Talocan in jeopardy,” he said.
“And Talocan has to take action to protect themselves.”
Huerta also confirmed that, like in the comics, Namor is a mutant. That opens up some very interesting questions about the likely appearance of the X-Men in the MCU, with Ms Marvel already confirmed as a mutant.
