Will Smith will return to our screens soon as the first trailer for Antoine Fuqua's Emancipation has been released.
The movie is based on true events and tells the story of a slave during the American Civil War named Peter, who escapes a Louisiana plantation and makes his way north to join the Union Army.
Smith has largely been out of the public eye since the Academy Awards when he made headlines around the world by going on stage and slapping host Chris Rock across the face after the comedian made jokes about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
The actor has released an apology video to his fans and to Rock, but it received a mixed response.
Rock, in particular, was not impressed, and has accused Smith of playing the victim in some of his stand-up shows since the incident.
In May of 2022, the release of Emancipation was delayed until 2023, and many critics believed this was due to the negative publicity surrounding Smith.
However, it was eventually confirmed that the movie would be released in cinemas and streaming on Apple TV + in December of 2022.
Will Smith to star in Brilliance
As well as a reported sequel to I am Legend, Smith is widely expected to star in Brilliance, an adaptation of the novel series of the same name by Marcus Sakey.
Brilliance tells the story of a world where 1% of the population are born with extraordinary cognitive skills. These people are referred to as 'Brilliants' and they can use their powers either for good or evil.
David Koepp wrote the initial draft of the adaptation, but Akiva Goldsman has taken on writing duties now, and he will produce the movie alongside Smith.
The Oscar winner hasn't been confirmed as playing the main character Nick Cooper as of yet, but Brilliance is believed to be a passion project for Smith so it is likely we will see him in front of the cameras.
There is a director on board now, too, as Ms Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be in charge of the project.
