In his very short cameo in The Batman, Barry Keoghan put in a scene-stealing performance as the most famous comic book villain in history, the Joker.
The character appears near the end of the movie in a conversation with The Riddler, played by Paul Dano. It was a short and sweet introduction to this new incarnation of the Joker.
However, it soon became known that Keoghan had filmed more scenes as the character, and this was shown via a deleted scene that was released. In it, Robert Pattinson's Batman visits the Joker in Arkham Asylum in an attempt to learn more about the murderous Riddler. It was a scene that evoked memories of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
Though Keoghan has short screen time - and even shorter on the theatrical release - he threw himself into the role, which he found intimidating due to having to live up to Heath Ledger's portrayal in The Dark Knight, and Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal in Joker which earned both men Academy Awards.
But, did you know that Keoghan actually auditioned for the role of Riddler, first?
To try and tempt director Matt Reeves to cast him, the Irishman spent $10 on a bowler hat and cane and made his own audition tape inspired by A Clockwork Orange.
"I just made it up. I wanted to make it Kubrick-y: symmetrical, the X on the back, the square doorframe, everything square," he told Esquire.
"I just wanted swag to come across. Swag and endearing. It was just me giving my idea. And then I'm like, 'I’ma send this in!' "
Reeves is currently working on The Batman: Part II but it is currently unknown if Keoghan will reprise his role of Joker alongside Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne.
