Whisper it quietly, but we might be getting a fourth Spider-Man movie from Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi.
The first Spider-Man movie, released in 2002, is credited with helping to kickstart the superhero movie boom that would go on to dominate the box office over the next 20 years. It was directed by Raimi and starred Maguire as Peter Parker, both of whom would return for Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.
After Spider-Man 3 received a negative response from critics, any plans for a fourth movie were shelved, which led to two subsequent reboots starring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland as the webslinger.
In 2021, Maguire and Garfield would reprise their roles as different versions of Peter, helping Holland's Spidey to defeat Green Goblin, Electro, Lizard and Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Thomas Haden Church played Sandman in Spider-Man 3 and No Way Home, and it seems he has heard through the grapevine that Raimi and Maguire could return to make a fourth movie together.
"There's always been some kind of…I've heard rumors…that Sam Raimi was going to do another with Tobey and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo," he told ComicBook.com.
Would Sam Raimi return to Spider-Man?
Raimi would return to the comic book world with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and when asked about potentially helming another Spider-Man movie, he told MoviePilot:
"I didn't think it was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse, I realised that anything is possible now so I'm completely open to it," he said.
One thing is certain - Raimi does want to work with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst again.
"I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible," the filmmaker explained to Fandango.
"I don't really have a story or a plan. I don't know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don't know what their thoughts are about that. I haven't really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I'd love to work with Tobey again, in a different role."
