Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, and that was followed up by The Temple of Doom in 1984 and The Last Crusade in 1989.
After a 19-year hiatus, Ford returned to the role for a fourth instalment, 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
That movie received a mixed reception from fans, but earned $790 million at the box office which led to plans for a sequel. In May of 2020, James Mangold was confirmed as director of Indiana Jones 5, while he has written the screenplay alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas will still be involved as executive producers.
Disney are keen to take advantage of the series' popularity by creating a series. Though it is unclear at this point if Indiana Jones will feature as a character, or whether the series will tie into the film franchise, it will be set in the archaeological adventure world.
It wouldn't be the first spin-off from the movie franchise either, as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles aired for two series between 1992 and 1993.
Indiana Jones 5 will be Harrison Ford's last
At Disney's D23 Expo, Ford took to the stage and became emotional as he introduced the first footage of Indy 5 while confirming this will be his last outing as the legendary adventurer.
"I'm very proud to say this one is fantastic. Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure, but they are also about heart," he said.
"We have a very human story to tell and a movie that will kick your ass!
"This is it! I will not fall down for you again!"
