With every new generation comes a new actor playing James Bond, and for a particular generation, the best incarnation of the character was played by Pierce Brosnan.
Following Licence to Kill in 1989, Timothy Dalton was poised to reprise the role of 007 in the next instalment. However, due to delays behind the scenes with numerous writers, directors and producers coming and going, Michael G. Wilson insisted that Dalton return for a number of movies in the 1990s.
Dalton disagreed with this assessment and officially resigned as Bond in 1994, opening the door for Brosnan.
Interestingly, Brosnan was in the running to replace Roger Moore but could not be cast due to his commitments on television series, Remington Steele.
The Irishman would go on to make four Bond movies, but doesn't look back on his time as 007 too fondly.
“I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger (Moore) and Sean (Connery),” he told The Telegraph back in 2014.
“It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn’t have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well.”
When asked if he has ever rewatched his own Bond movies, he replied:
“I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. ‘Cause it’s just never good enough. It’s a horrible feeling.”
Within our MovieMeter community, there are naturally various James Bond movies that have received hugely positive responses. By subscribing to become a member of the MovieMeter community HERE, you can rate all of your favourite movies - and some of your least favourite ones.
According to our community, the best Bond movie featuring Brosnan is 1995's GoldenEye, which also inspired quite possibly the greatest video game of all time for the Nintendo 64.
Die Another Day is (obviously) Brosnan's worst, with Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough sandwiched in between.
