Director Francis Lawrence has provided an update on the development of Constantine 2.
For the first movie released in 2005, Keanu Reeves starred as John Constantine, a chain-smoking exorcist who has the ability to community with angels and demons in their true forms on Earth.
It received mixed reviews at the time of release, but over time reception has become much more positive, to the point where it is considered a cult movie.
A television series based on the character was produced, but fans have been clamouring for a Reeves-led sequel, which was eventually confirmed in 2022. If it wasn't for the writer and actor strikes in Hollywood, it might have actually started production already.
"Luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about," Lawrence told The Wrap.
"It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit. So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.”
Reeves desperate to make Constantine 2
Reeves has always campaigned for a second movie, and now he is getting his wish.
"I don't know if it was unfinished business but it was definitely a role that I loved, and I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work. I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film," he previously explained to TotalFilm.
"It's exciting. It's almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal, but I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully it can happen.
"You don't know how these things go. But I'm definitely going to try my darnedest to try and realise that dream."
