Chris Hemsworth admits he was sick of playing Thor until the character went through a series of reinventions.
In Thor and Thor: The Dark World, and arguably The Avengers, Hemsworth played Thor relatively straight and serious - the hammer-wielding God of Thunder.
As the MCU progressed, we saw the actor's comedic chops impress through various different incarnations of the character. The Big Lebowski version of Thor comes to mind.
It is working with numerous different directors and writers over the course of his time in the MCU that has kept Hemsworth coming back for four stand-alone Thor movies as well as multiple other appearances.
“I love the experience , " he told GQ.
"I love the fact that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. Thor 1 and 2 were their own thing, Thor 3 and 4 were a very different feel… and then even Avengers, the Lebowski Thor, the Infinity War Thor, due to different directors and I think mostly my own need to do something different.
"You know, I got sick of the character pretty quick every couple of years!"
Furiosa the best experience of Hemsworth's career
In 2024, Hemsworth will join the Mad Max franchise by starring as the villain in Furiosa, directed by George Miller and starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role.
It is set as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road.
“I came into that film exhausted. I thought, ‘How am I going to get through this?’” Hemsworth admits.
“Week one of rehearsals with George, all of a sudden it was this reigniting of my creative energy. It was by far the best experience of my career, and something I feel the most proud of. It made me think, the work isn’t what’s exhausting, it’s what kind of work it is, and how invested I am in it and if it is challenging in the right ways.”
As for Thor, Hemsworth has stated in the past that he would return to the role if the script and circumstances were right.
