Marvel executive Nate Moore says any further Black Panther movies will depend on the reaction to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The first Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman in the title role, was released in 2018 and was an enormous success both critically and commercially.
It earned $1.348 billion at the worldwide box office and became the first ever superhero movie to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
Tragically, Boseman passed away in 2020 after losing a cancer battle, which eventually raised questions about the future of his character, T'Challa, and the Black Panther franchise as a whole.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be released this November with T'Challa not being present. Though this decision was made to honour Boseman, there are those that feel the character of T'Challa will be abandoned which could impact those who looked up to him, in particular young, black men.
A petition was created online to recast Boseman, though nothing materialised from that.
Black Panther 3 details
Moore insists that Marvel will wait and see how audiences react to Wakanda Forever before any third entry in the franchise is greenlit.
"That's a great question. To be honest, this is not me trying to not answer the question," he said when asked by Collider about a Black Panther 3.
"We really want to see how audiences receive the film, and I think really interested to see how the film plays before we decide.
"There are certainly ideas we've floated around of what a third film could be if we get to make it.
"But until the movie comes out, we're a bit superstitious in that way. We don't want to count our chickens, because you never know what's going to happen."
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Leticia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta and Martin Freeman.
