Quote: "This work presents 369 British films produced between 1937 and 1964 that embody many of the same filmic qualities as those "black films" made in the United States during the classic film Noir era. This reference work makes a case for the inclusion of the British films in the Film-Noir canon, which is still considered by some to be an exclusively American inventory. In the book's main section, the following information is presented for each film: a quote from the film; the title and release date; a rating based on the five-star system; the production company, director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and main performers; and a plot synopsis with author commentary. Appendices categorize films by rating, release date, director and cinematographer and also provide a noir and non-noir breakdown of the 47 films presented on the Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre, a 1960s British television series that was also shown in the United States."
Releasedatum: 9 maart 2008 (Bron: http://tinyurl.com/2ghbx9)

(All times PST)
# Vandaag:
5PM: High Wall (1947) Psychiatry! Dir: Curtis Bernhardt
7PM : The Cobweb (1955) Dir: Vincente Minelli. Gloria Grahame, Bacall, Widmark. A posh asylum!
# Wed the 12th:
8AM: Man in the Vault (1956) IIRC this was one of James Ellroy's picks when he got to sit with Bob Osbourne and choose a whole night of flicks.(Correctie met onderstaande poster wacht op accoord)

9:30AM Union Station (1950) Dir: Rudolf Mate. LA -Noir!
11AM: Walk A Crooked Mile (1948) ...has Dennis O'Keefe in it and is set around Scotland Yard.
3PM: Underworld USA (1961) Sam Fuller! A REVENGE film.
1:15AM: Sweet Smell of Success (1957) 'Nuff said.
# Friday the 14th:
3AM: The Amazing Transparent Man (1960) More sci-fi than noir, but b&w and 57 mins, and - best of all - directed by Edgar G. Ulmer
Sat the 15th:
5:30AM: Berlin Express (1948) Dir: Jacques Tourneur. Robert Ryan. On-location in bombed-out post-WW2 Europe.
# Sunday the 16th:
1:15 and 4PM: Key Largo/Rear Window (TCM is playing Hitchcock films throughout the month and I'm not including them here except this one, as it's derived from Woolrich.)
7:30PM: The Blue Gardenia (1953) Dir: Fritz Lang.
# Monday the 17th:
5PM: They Live By Night (1949) Dir: Nicholas Ray
Tuesday 18th:
3:30PM: Lady From Shanghai (1948) Dir: Orson Welles
# Wed 19th:
4AM: The Strange Woman (1946) Dir: Edgar Ulmer. Hedy Lamarr! Period piece. Looks great.
# Saturday 22th:
5:15AM Crossfire (1947) Dir: Ed. Dmytryk. Roberts: Ryan, Young, Mitchum.
# 1e paasdag (14th):
6:30PM: Mildred Pierce (1945)
# 2e paasdag ( 25th):
5AM - 7AM - 9AM: The Desperate Hours (1955), The Strange Woman (again)(1946), Brute Force (1947).
5PM: The Dark Past (1948) Dir: Rudolf Mate. More half-baked Hollywood Freudianism.
8PM: Blind Alley (1939) Dir: Charles Vidor. In Arthur Lyons's wonderful little book, Death On The Cheap: The Lost B Movies of Film Noir, check out this passage:
"Although many critics cite RKO's Stranger On The Third Floor (1940) as first true film noir, 1939 was actually the year that inaugurated the film noir with release of three prototypical films: Let Us Live, Rio, and Blind Alley. Of the three, Columbia's Blind Alley is by far the best, a little masterpiece about a killer who is afraid he is going insane. The movie was creatively directed by the emigre director Charles Vidor and extremely well acted by its cast, which included Chester Morris, Ann Dvorak, and Ralph Bellamy. Blind Alley showed audiences how good a B movie could be; movie historian Don Miller cites the film as a primary example of the fact that Bs were starting to achieve respectability by 1939." - p.35
Lucien Ballard is the DP on Blind Alley, and this film was remade as The Dark Past, which plays earlier on the same day. I'm very much looking forward to seeing this flick, and I don't give a crap about the claims of the "first" noir or what have ya, frankly.
*# Wed the 26th:
3AM: The Seventh Victim (1943) Dir: Mark Robson. Not a Film-Noir per se, but it looks quite noirish and is part of the great Val Lewton cycle. It's got quite a cult following, in case you haven't checked it out yet.
# Thur 27th:
7PM: The Spiral Staircase (1946) Dir: Rbt Siodmak. I consider this "period" Noir. Great lighting. Gothic, creepy family in a big house, lightning storm, bad Freudianisms.
# Friday the 28th:
6:15AM: Strange Love of Martha Ivers
11:45AM: The Naked Kiss (Sam Fuller!)

-OOP): Link!
# Persbericht, quote:
"What is it about the dark world view -- rainy nights, unfamiliar and unfriendly streets, shady grifters and duplicitous dames – that archetypal Film-Noir milieu that fascinates us so? The plight of an Everyman (or woman) sucked into a whirlpool of dismal circumstance beyond his control – these scenarios hold us spellbound. Are we watching as voyeurs, glad to see someone else with worse luck than our own? Or are we hoping to find a key to dealing with our own existential plight that may not be as violent or as dramatic but nevertheless just as traumatizing? All one has to do is listen to the news to see very plainly that, hey, it’s a noir world, baby!
Today, with unparalleled global access through the Internet, we witness it on a worldwide scale. To help you chart your path through a perilously dark universe, we’ve assembled another grand gathering of noir gems, starring an array of iconic noir role models, including Humphrey Bogart, Lizabeth Scott, Burt Lancaster, Peter Lorre, Barbara Stanwyck, Steve Cochran, Ida Lupino, Edward G. Robinson, Dana Andrews, Richard Widmark and more!
A few of these classics are encore presentations (DESERT FURY, WICKED WOMAN, STRANGER ON THE THIRD FLOOR, TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY, HIGHWAY 301).
But the majority are masterpieces we’ve never shown before, including popular favorites DEAD RECKONING, SORRY WRONG NUMBER, BOOMERANG, NORA PRENTISS and NIGHT AND THE CITY.
We’ll also be screening such ultra-rare titles as the Dick Powell double shot of CORNERED and TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH, the James Mason bill of Carol Reed’s THE MAN BETWEEN and ONE WAY STREET, plus HELL’S FIVE HOURS, CRY OF THE HUNTED, LURE OF THE SWAMP, THE RED HOUSE, Richard Fleischer’s THE CLAY PIGEON and Don Siegel’s COUNT THE HOURS.
There’ll be brand new 35mm prints, as well, of such rarities as NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES, THE NIGHT HOLDS TERROR, THE FACE BEHIND THE MASK, THE STORY OF MOLLY X and WOMAN IN HIDING, many of these struck at the enthusiastic urging of The Film Noir Foundation.
And the vast majority? Yes, still not on DVD! Last but not least, Noir City bon vivant and co-programmer Eddie Muller *) will be presenting the L.A. Premiere of his directorial debut, the stunning, suspenseful short film The Grand Inquisitor, with 90-year-old star (and noir icon) Marsha Hunt (RAW DEAL) in attendance! Starting the first week, hosted by Alan K. Rode and Chris D with Eddie Muller joining us for the second and third weekends.
Don’t miss this series, one of our best yet!"

'Sony will be releasing several film noir box sets with the first one definitely out in 2009. A number of titles are in the mix including 'Knock on Any Door' and 'Human Desire' for either Volume 1 or 2' .
