Actress Shelley Winters, the larger-than-life movie star who became one of only two women to win two Best Supporting Actress Oscars, died Saturday in Beverly Hills; she was 85. The actress died of heart failure early Saturday morning, following hospitalization at the Rehabilitation Center in Beverly Hills after suffering a heart attack in October. A woman with a zest for living and a loud, brassy attitude to match her appetites, Winters was born Shirley Schrift in East St. Louis, IL, and started her career as a chorus girl before moving on to stage parts in New York; she would later study at the legendary Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg. Signed to a contract with Columbia in the 40s, the actress received her new name and a number of unmemorable, and mostly uncredited, supporting parts before returning to Broadway. She was lured back to Hollywood, though, by Universal, which transformed her into a stunning blonde bombshell, and her first memorable role was opposite Oscar winner Ronald Colman in A Double Life. Her reputation as an actress was cemented with her amazing performance in 1951's A Place in the Sun alongside Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor; her heart-wrenching role, which forced her to tone down her glamorous image, earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination and put her on the Hollywood map. Other films in the 50s included the classic The Night of the Hunter, I Am a Camera, and Executive Suite. She capped the decade with The Diary of Anne Frank, and her turn as Mrs. Van Daan won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, which she later donated to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

As Winters' fame in movies grew, so did her reputation as a life-loving, outspoken, lustful, political, provocative woman. Her romances were as legendary as any male star of the era, and she counted William Holden, Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, Sean Connery, Sterling Hayden and Errol Flynn among her conquests. She was married three times, first to businessman Paul Meyer, then to actors Vittorio Gassman (with whom she had a daughter) and Anthony Franciosa; both marriages to the Italian actors were notoriously volatile. In 1962, Winters played the mother of the nymphet Lolita in the Stanley Kubrick film, a turning point at which her performances would become broader and more outrageous. She won her second Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1965's A Patch of Blue, and her hateful role as the mother of a blind woman was in stark contrast to her previous Oscar-winning performance. (Aside from Winters, the only other actress to win two Best Supporting Actress Oscars is Dianne Wiest.) Winters also appeared in Alfie, Harper, and A House is Not a Home in the 60s, and the 70s brought on such movies as Bloody Mama, Who Slew Auntie Roo and Cleopatra Jones, though her sentimental and winning performance in The Poseidon Adventure, as an overweight woman whose swimming talents help lead her fellow passengers to safety, received yet another Oscar nomination. Soulzanger Wilson Pickett overleden.

De Amerikaanse soulzanger Wilson Pickett is donderdag op 64-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij bezweek aan een hartaanval in een ziekenhuis, niet ver van zijn woonplaats Virginia.

Pickett brak door in 1965 toen hij een contract tekende bij platenmaatschappij Atlantic en een succesvolle solocarrière startte. Hij scoorde hits als Mustang Sally en In The Midnight Hour. In de jaren '70 verhuisde Pickett naar andere platenlabels. In 1991 werd hij opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Acteur Anthony Franciosa overleden.

Vijf dagen na zijn ex-vrouw, Shelley Winters, is de Amerikaanse acteur Anthony Franciosa in Los Angeles gestorven. De 77-jarige overleed donderdag aan een hartaanval. Zijn vierde vrouw, het vroegere Duitse model Rita Thiel, was tot het laatst aan zijn zijde.

Franciosa liep als jonge acteur in de kijker door zijn vertolking op Broadway van het stuk 'A Hatful of Rain'. Toen hij die rol ook speelde in Fred Zinnemanns gelijknamige filmversie uit 1957 kreeg hij een Oscarnominatie als beste acteur. Hij speelde vervolgens in verscheidene grote films waaronder 'A Face in the Crowd' (regie Elia Kazan, 1957), 'The Long Hot Summer' (Martin Ritt, 1958) en 'Rio Conchos' (Gordon Douglas, 1964). In de jaren zestig begon zijn ster te tanen.

Franciosa huwde vier keer en had drie kinderen. Zijn beroemdste vrouw was actrice Shelley Winters, met wie hij gehuwd was van 1957 tot 1960.

Voor de Belgen: filmkenner Roland Lommé, vroeger nog presentator van Star, is overleden.

Filmkenner Roland Lommé overleden.

Roland Lommé, een van de grote filmkenners van Vlaanderen, is op 69-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat hebben VTM en VRT vrijdagavond gemeld. Volgens de VRT was de prominente tv-figuur begin deze week opgenomen in een ziekenhuis met een bloedziekte.

Hij werd bekend met Première Magazine op de openbare omroep BRT en presenteerde nadien het filmprogramma Star op VTM. Hij stond bekend voor zijn interviews met filmvedetten en regisseurs. Zo interviewde hij onder meer de Italiaanse regisseur Frederico Fellini. Hij was aldus één van de weinige Vlamingen die toegang had tot internationale filmvedetten.

Lommé was éen van de pioniers bij VTM. Hij was tot 1999 verantwoordelijk voor de filmaankopen voor de commerciële zender. Daarna kwam het met een breuk met VTM. Na zijn vertrek raakte hij in een dispuut verwikkeld over zijn ontslagvergoeding.

Met Gaby Feyaerts, ex-hoofd informatie bij VTM, ondernam hij het project TV2000 voor een nieuwe televisiezender. Er was een licentie, maar het project kwam nooit van de grond. Lommé was ook trouwe bezoeker van het filmfestival van Cannes.

Acteur Chris Penn overleden.

Actor Chris Penn, brother of Sean Penn and star of such films as Reservoir Dogs and Mulholland Falls, was found dead Tuesday at a condominium in Santa Monica; he was 43. Few details were released surrounding Penn's death late Tuesday afternoon, though sources reported there were no signs of foul play, and an autopsy was to be conducted to determine the cause of death. A spokesperson for the Penn family confirmed the actor's passing and released a statement saying that Penn's family "would appreciate the media's respect of their privacy during this difficult time."

The son of director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan, Penn was the younger brother of Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn and musician Michael Penn, and began his acting career in the early 80s, appearing in such films as Rumble Fish, All the Right Moves, and Footloose; he appeared alongside his brother in the 1986 film At Close Range. Penn went on to specialize in working-class character roles, achieving fame for his portrayal of Nice Guy Eddie Cabot in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs as well as such films as Short Cuts and Mulholland Falls. Most recently, he appeared in episodes of TV series Entourage and Everwood, and his latest film, The Darwin Awards, was slated for a premiere Wednesday night at the Sundance Film Festival
