Great soundtrack, ominous atmosphere and excellent acting, but a shame about the conventional chase ending.

3.75*

Before Blake Edwards made his mark on cinematic history with the Pink Panther comedies, he directed this suspenseful thriller in which Kelly Sherwood (Lee Remick), a young woman, is attacked in her home by an asthmatic, sinister villain (Ross Martin). He threatens to kill Kelly's younger sister, Toby (Stefanie Powers), if Kelly refuses to rob a bank. Kelly manages to contact the police and receives help from Officer John Ripley (Glenn Ford).

Philip Lathrop's stylish cinematography and Henry Mancini's excellent score—which in places strongly recalls Bernard Herrmann's masterpiece Psycho—enhance the already oppressive atmosphere that Blake Edwards creates through unusual camera angles and clever lighting. Remick is also very convincing in the lead role, and Martin delivers a memorable villain, ensuring the film maintains suspense from start to finish.

A very good thriller that immediately grabs you by the throat... literally. It follows a classic pattern, namely the hunt for a criminal, but several elements contribute to a pleasant tension. For example, one doesn't know whether the man is acting alone or has accomplices. This is cleverly played with several times. Mancini's opening music seems to hint at a true film noir classic, or in this case, a forgotten classic. A young bank clerk is forced by a serious criminal to cheat her employer out of a substantial sum, or her sister will have to pay the price. Remick gives a good performance, though she never really conveyed a sense of terror.
