Minnesota, 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates a case involving a young woman named Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father John Gray (David Dencik) of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without memory pleads guilty, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) set to help him relive his memories and they seem to uncover a horrifying national mystery.

In terms of mystery, this thriller is quite successful. At the same time it also has a good atmosphere, but the story is less. Quite a strange story about a certain sect where nothing is as it seems. Regression doesn't really come out well, the film isn't exciting enough for that. Fortunately, the mystery still ensures that the film is still reasonably doable.

Amenábar who ventures into a Fincher film, it's something different. He is not bad at all, although he is not entirely successful. But personally I think it's even better than what Fincher usually does with it, the atmosphere that Amenábar conjures up on the screen is just a bit heavier.
A police film with small touches of horror and a solid chunk of thriller elements. Very dark from start to finish, with lots of grays and blues. Well-lived characters, uninspiring events and a web of intrigue in which Hawke seems to be completely drowning. Also a nice role from Thewlis, but that is always good.
It's all fine, at the same time you've seen it all before. Amenábar just doesn't succeed in turning it into something exceptional, but it is a quality film that doesn't really sink in anywhere and continues to intrigue throughout the entire length. Nice ending too, fits this movie.
