We are in Normandy during the summer. Everyone is young, it is the time of holiday love. The Mont-Saint-Michel is briefly visited, the hydrangea is in bloom. On the beach the girls parade in bikinis and the boys with their surfboards. Then, however, there are scenes indoors in the darkness, sometimes shown from the point of view of someone peeking in.

The dialogues were partly created from improvisation. The differences between the characters are made clear through face-to-face confrontations. Pauline is spontaneous and untainted. She has a boyish haircut and is looking for simple friendship. Her cousin Marion looks like a fashion model and is looking for short-term excitement. Henri is a womanizer who is compared to a wolf. A great moment is when Pauline knocks him back with her feet. Pierre is more sympathetic but jealous. After all the intrigue the two women come to a beautiful conclusion: each has his own truth.

The colors of the French flag are used: lots of white and blue, occasionally bright red as a symbol of passion. Several images are inspired by paintings by Matisse, especially La Blouse Romaine, which can also be seen on the poster.

Relationship bullshit in a holiday context. In the beginning I expected some problems between the four protagonists, but it turned out to be a wait for Godot. It remains just talking and philosophizing about relationships, who suits whom and why and why not, whether you should let the mind or the heart speak. The kind of stuff that was progressive and hip at the time, but now sounds rather outdated and whiny. Almost pedagogical even: Rohmer will explain what love is. I also didn't think it worked as a comedy. They should explain to me what there was to laugh about because I thought the tone was very serious and pedantic. There are many better French holiday films.

A classic French summer film, a classic Rohmer, a very nice drama again. I was a bit put off in advance by the chance of an endless talk film, but luckily it remained light enough and therefore easy to digest. Rohmer once again succeeds in making man's philosophical search for himself, the other and ultimate love flirt with a sultry summer atmosphere through complex relationships.

I recently had the pleasure of staying in Normandy in the town where the film was shot (Jullouville, located on the beach overlooking Granville) and even saw Marion and Pauline's house. And, after a wonderful sailing adventure, that fairytale phenomenon could be seen in the evening at sunset, the ray of light shortly before the sun completely disappears - 'le rayon vert'
