Cocoon plot

"Beyond the innocence of youth, and the wisdom of age, lies the wonder of... Cocoon"

Art, Ben and Joe, elderly residents of a retirement home, regularly go over the wall to swim in the pool of an empty villa. Lately this seems to give them new energy. One day, Walter and his niece Kitty move into the villa. What do they have to do with the strange cocoons in the pool? And what kind of cocoons are those?

Strange story actually and the humor is a bit stale, just like the elderly (which is what this film is all about). Basically, three old guys take sneaky trips to a swimming pool. In that pool are a number of mega shells that provide unexpected energetic effects. Fortunately, everything remains within limits and ridiculous antics are avoided. The old ones will come into contact with aliens and then I won't say anything more because I'll start spoilers. Half an hour before the end you already think you are at the end, but then everything goes on for another half hour. Even so strange .

Cocoon for me is pure youth sentiment. When it came out and later on TV, everyone was talking about it at school. Unique adventure sf movie. So I would call this movie more of a science fiction/adventure and not a comedy. There are some nice bits in between, but he is also dead serious at times. Do I want to get that old? It is also a film with beautiful dilemmas. Beautifully made for the time and much better than the bland Close Encounters of the Third Kind from 1977, which I thought was a weak film. Cocoon has been made much more mature. The construction is well cared for and if you've never seen it, certainly surprising. You won't be surprised that most of them have died by now, but I didn't think Wilford Brimley was still alive. Now 82 this year. Brian Dennehy is also still in our midst. But he's a alien (lol).

Cocoon has now been released on a beautiful blu ray version. Looks good for a movie over 30 years old. Music is well taken care of. Dialogues a bit soft at times. Could be my speakers. There is also a nice booklet about aging which Hollywood stars find difficult. So it was also difficult to find older actors!

Anyway, I'm slightly surprised that this film is so weakly received both here and on IMDb. I thought it was a great film at the time and still strong in 2017. Just for the enthusiasts

Strangely enough, you don't see a film on TV that often, because it was a reasonable box-office success. I personally find it on the mediocre side. The feel-good is quite forced with the constantly chattering oldies, although the idea of the rejuvenation cure is well thought out and applied. And the aliens? Well, we're in the eighties and they just had to add people to the halls. The "modern" special effects were still in their infancy at the time and you can tell by looking at it. Not a film that leaves a big impression, but fortunately not a frustrating monstrosity either.
