Lesser Wood.

Although the passion and the clumsiness are still just as charming, I find this to be the least Wood so far. It is mainly because of the pace that works very slowly, it is actually quite boring compared to his other films. Maybe because Edward sticks to the story here, in his other films it jumped from here to there, which made you as a viewer stand with your mouth open at how stupidly the story turned. Bride of the Monster has a hold, which does not work well.

Some remarkable and memorable special effects and set designs. The acting is also top-notch, making it a reasonable hour.

Not entirely enthusiastic, but still funny for once.

Very funny work by Edward D Wood Jr and a film that is largely central to Tim Burton's fantastic film about Ed Wood. Wood has gained the reputation as the worst filmmaker of all time, although there are undoubtedly thousands of productions that are worse than a Bride of the Monster. Or at least a lot less entertaining, because usually many mediocre to bad films are boring and lifeless and that is not the case with Bride of the Monster. Some scenes are quite drawn out - for example, we see the police lieutenant extensively fetching water for his bird - but it remains very entertaining to watch. Wood often has people walking around, but even that is quite unnatural.

One of the best elements of Bride of the Monster is of course the octopus - the combination of obvious stock footage and a monster that doesn't work makes for some really funny scenes. In any case, the film is at its funniest when there's some action and the most clumsy romps. The acting isn't all that bad for a film like this, even though you can tell that most of the actors are a bit lost. Bela Lugosi is a bit of a wimp and clearly barely gets any direction, but that also has something charming. And that goes for the entire film; it's a sympathetic and occasionally hilarious horror film. And it's only a little over 60 minutes long, so that makes it quite worthwhile. I know plenty of films that are much more highly regarded, but that are much less entertaining and also a lot harder to get through. In that respect, Wood didn't do so badly.

2.5 stars.

Here and there good funny, but really absurdly slow, and I say that as a lover of trash movies. Plan 9 had more craziness, which keeps it fun. Tor Johnson really rocks the pan as Lobo. The monster is also of exceptional level. Words fail me.
