Milou en Mai plot

Near Bordeaux, Madame Vieuzac dies in her beautiful old house-with-vineyard. Her son Emile, alias Milou, sends the sad message to the family. Shortly afterwards the motley crew arrives and they immediately start dividing the inheritance. This is much to the chagrin of Milou. It is May '68 and even in the distant Bordeaux people can feel the tension. Because the cemetery staff is also on strike, the funeral has to be postponed and the whole family will have to spend a few days together.

I agree with all of the above. It started as a very nice and atmospheric film. Extremely relaxed, especially, with (obviously) a brilliant Michel Piccoli. No actor has such an infectious laugh. .

Lots of nice characters and nice scenes too. But... halfway through, or rather, about three quarters of the way through, it all started to get very exaggerated and not that fun anymore with the revolution stuff and running into the woods. Shame.

Funny comedy with quite a few bizarre scenes that will make you laugh. Towards the end the film fades a bit. I'm actually used to Louis Malle better and I wonder if comedies are really his thing.

I got a bit of an Eric Rohmer feeling. Films somewhere in the south of France, holiday atmosphere, characters enjoying life and dealing with each other's positives and negatives. Here with the death of the mother of the house for dessert.

The body remains there for a while and everyone gets the opportunity to say goodbye. Strange scenes indeed, where there is regularly a lot of traffic, children slipping through the skirts and all that under the watchful eye (well) of our unfortunate lady.

Family that barely sees each other and only comes together at important moments, well, it is a difficult audience when the legacy is discussed. No violent arguments or anything, but some business and immediate decisions are made with little sense of empathy and shame. The son, Milou, experiences it all, although he also focuses on other distractions...

Not a bad Malle, but he does indeed have better films than this.
