The Bedford Incident plot
"“Hunt her down … until she comes up!”"
A journalist is assigned to write a piece about a naval vessel sailing near Antarctica. He soon falls under the spell of the Commanding Commander Eric Finlander. Finlander is an extremely patriotic and anti-communist man who makes his crew toil to the limit. Moreover, the journalist suspects Finlander of behaving as if it were war.

A good film in which the captain of a navy ship enforces a strict policy towards his men. The film takes place entirely on the ship but remains entertaining, despite the fact that the submarine plot doesn't really become exciting. The characters are well-developed, and this is certainly due to the excellent acting of the entire cast. A good ending as well, which undoubtedly had more impact at the time.

The fact that the journalist suspects Finlander of behaving as if it were war is never explicitly stated in the film, but is conveyed indirectly throughout; this immediately highlights the film's strength: the dialogue is strong and the tension is effectively built up over the course of the film. Widmark is very strong in playing a commander whose fanaticism is visible in his eyes without him having to say a single word.
A film like this could no longer be made nowadays, simply because no one knows how to write dialogue or create a narrative arc anymore.
Only Tarantino could still do this.
