An impressive piece of cinema by Gröning about domestic violence. Fifty-nine chapters offer a realistic portrayal of this issue, including the still-too-common conclusion.
Gröning captures the film both from a distance and intimately. And again, he plays with sound, deafeningly absent yet present. Other imagery is also abundant. And even in my theater, it was deathly quiet. Shifting in your cinema seat is a punishment. Gröning punishes the viewer, also through the 59 intermezzos before and after the chapters.
It was shaping up to be a masterpiece, but unfortunately, Gröning misses the mark completely with the presence of "the old man." Who is he, or what does he embody? I was interpreting it wildly throughout the film, but an answer remained elusive. Unnecessary posturing, or perhaps the mental torture Gröning wants his viewers to endure? Ouch!

A thrilling action film about the difficult and dangerous life of a police officer. He becomes extremely stressed by all those deer in the woods, and when he gets home, he occasionally beats up his wife to vent his frustrations at work. A slow and rather experimental film in 59 sometimes ultra-short chapters. The film clocks in at a whopping three hours and is barely passable at this pace. But perseverance pays off, and finally, after a little over an hour, a story actually begins to take shape. I even began to hope that I was watching a real movie an hour and a half later. A film about domestic violence. But the first two sentences of my review paint a more interesting picture of the film.
The plot of this film also makes absolutely no sense. What do you mean, moved to a small town? Which of the 59 chapters is that? And then it also says the man spends all his time on his job. So surely all those chapters were cut too? And there really should have been 100. I found it remarkable that the police officer in the film barely works and, apart from one serious accident, experiences nothing else on the job. And then there's also something in the plot about raising money for the family? Which family and what money? Surely that was cut too? Maybe I should also watch the director's cut of 100 chapters and six hours.
