Ben Stiller, the master of the socially akward outcasts. For lack of a decent Dutch term. Ben Stiller has a kind of patent on these roles and this time too it goes very well.

We meet Walter Mitty, a slow diver who at random moments dreams away in his own world and does things there that he doesn't dare to do in real life. But then, by a twist of fate, he has to actually take action and his life, noticed or unnoticed, starts to resemble the things he daydreams.

If you understand what the gimmick is, it's a bit disappointing. The title seems to contain more than what the film actually offers. There is not much mystery. Actually, there is no secret at all. Because most people in the film know that Walter occasionally daydreams in his own little world. That's too bad. You expect a completely different twist. If you hadn't read the synopsis, you would expect fantasy and reality to magically merge at some point, but unfortunately that doesn't happen.

The cast is fun. From his fat colleague to the insufferable boss (with a beard). The love-interest-MILF is also very well cast. Furthermore, a nice soundtrack stands out, in addition to beautiful images of Greenland and Iceland. What is also striking is the complete and total predictability. You can see the how and why of the negative, up to and including the end, coming from afar. Because the film feels nice and looks good, you are left with a nice feeling, but if you think about it for a moment, it turns out that the film raises high expectations with the title and intro and then actually takes a very boring and silly path.

2.5 stars

I'm avoiding Ben Stiller these days, mainly because he always plays pretty much the same kind of role, and certainly always in the same way. And certainly this film, because also a remake of a film with the completely inimitable Danny Kaye. Mary, then my girlfriend arrives with a DVD. So just seen. And I have to say, there are worse movies, although I still don't really like Stiller. And then I still have to say that Hollywood really should stop making over and over and over again a movie that once did well - is it a sign of how deep the despair and the cluelessness there meanwhile is, that the original must be sought so long ago? Well, at least this isn't a very literal remake. It couldn't be, because Stiller doesn't come close to Kaye.

The story is actually very simple. The film is actually one big quest. To a friend, to a negative, to work. So the film has the wrong title. The search of Walter Mitty should have been it lol. I didn't think it was a bad movie. Simple story but with funny moments. Good chemistry between Stiller and Wiig. The pace is also fast so that the film never gets bored.
