Horribly bad.

And that starts right from the opening. The chase through San Francisco's world-famous winding street is so phony right from the start that the mood is set. Ugly footage with ugly effects, and apparently filmed primarily in pouring rain—even if there's a bit of sunshine, it's still coming from the wrong angle. Was the idea to convey a kind of bleakness? Well, it certainly succeeds, but it primarily exudes bleakness throughout the film—not the story.

Danny Trejo is by far the best actor in the film. Unfortunately, he doesn't get a full-length role, so we have to make do with the somewhat faded beauty of Mariel Hemingway. LeVar Burton also doesn't do much with his small supporting role.

A waste of time, even on a very rainy Sunday afternoon, you'd still be better off reading a book, knitting, or taking a brisk walk. Or maybe the only purpose of this kind of film is to teach us to appreciate good movies all the more.

After the main film of the evening, Sinners, I tackled some cheap horror, in this case zombies. That turned out to be Rise of the Zombies, which I'd had lying around for quite a while and thought I'd give it a try. And I'm sure I won't surprise anyone by saying it wasn't good.

The film itself is quite appealing because Danny Trejo is prominently featured on the cover, which isn't necessarily a big deal. It's also notable that the San Francisco and Alcatraz locations are quite well-conceived, the cast isn't all that outlandish, with quite a few familiar faces, and Heather Hemmens is especially pleasing to the eye.

But that's about it, and the rest is actually pretty awful. The story is three times shit, the acting is three times shit, and it all looks incredibly cheap and awful. Even the nice number of kills in the opening and the requisite amount of gore can't make up for it all. And with this film, I've probably also seen one of the biggest contenders for worst film of the year.
