In Hong Kong, fugitive Dan Hardesty briefly meets Joan Ames and is attracted to her over a cocktail together. When he leaves the bar, Dan is arrested by Steve Burke. Burke is a San Francisco police detective who has chased him almost all over the world, wanting to see Dan executed in San Quentin Prison. Steve takes his prisoner aboard the next ship sailing to the United States. Also on this ship is Joan, who is now attracted to Dan. Joan is awaiting death due to an incurable heart condition. The two lovers are thus reunited, but they hide their tragic fate from each other.
