Inuk plot

Inuk has a hard life in Nuuk, the icy capital of Greenland. He lives there with his alcoholic mother and his cheeky stepfather. One morning, the completely hypothermic boy is pulled from an abandoned car by a local social worker. Without hesitation, she sends Inuk north to an orphanage on an island in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, where an orphanage was built. There he meets the hunter Ikuma. Ikuma hunts polar bears, but is now on the decline and haunted by memories of his past. Aviaaja, the director of the orphanage, suggests that the boy go to the annual seal hunt with the old hunter.

How could it be otherwise, my first film from Greenland. Well, I wasn't blown away. I already had a stronger development of Inuk in mind. The beginning is certainly strong and is also somewhat clichéd of a talented boy who grows up in an underprivileged family in which the mother's alcohol addiction in particular weighs heavily on Inuk. The move to the institution, the meeting with the hunter ... I expected a more intimate and intense bond between the two. Now it was more like snow classes with the whole group, so I missed that extra emotionality.

The landscapes packed with (the treacherous) ice made up for it. The images with the dog sleds were also nice, but there were so many images in it. The film lacked some sharpness, a bit obedient and therefore poorly developed.

Interesting was the necessary attention to climate changes and the difficult conditions for survival, also for humans as residents and as hunters.

Precisely on the coldest day of the year I come across the North Pole, more specifically Greenland. Modernity has penetrated daily life in the capital Nuuk. At Inuk's house they have a TV and a refrigerator, and he even plays in a rock band. An element of traditional Inuit culture emerges when he starts selling tupilaks - bone-carved figurines with mystical meanings. The language of instruction is Greenlandic.

The big turnaround comes when Inuk is sent north to Uummannaq. There he gets to know the traditional way of life with hunting and fishing. Animal rights activists will be less enthusiastic about what happens to a seal. It produces beautiful images with ice fields, snowy mountains and a timid sun that tries to break through the freezing polar air. A beautiful moment is when a husky stretches while yawning. The story gets a bit sentimental, but the bright white surroundings and the authentic culture make up for that. And now it's time to turn the radiator up a bit.
