Frustrating how the setting and atmosphere of criminal Cape Town deserve a much better film than the clichéd elaboration. As if the makers have kept a checklist to keep it within the neat lines of a buddy cop movie. The unstable, always drunk detective with his heart in the right place. Check! The righteous servant with childhood trauma. Check! The rich girl who is found dead in a slum. Check! Officers who are suspended for aggressive behavior. Check! A partner is murdered, setting off a revenge campaign. Check! The 'black' criminals are just a linchpin in a 'white' conspiracy by nefarious businessmen. Check! Check! Check! It's that Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker are nice to each other, because otherwise it is a very predictable film without doing justice to its social issues.

Pretty okay.

Basically a very simple police film. A girl is found murdered, a police couple is assigned to the case, a bit of fringe drama to give the officers some more individuality and furthermore a murder case that needs to be solved.

Bloom and Whitaker do a pretty good job, but in the end it's the setting that gives this film something extra. South Africa is a separate country and since there is a lot of fun juggling with local languages and dialects, it quickly feels very different from the average buddy cop movie.

In addition, it is also quite brutal and Salle knows how to portray it all nicely. It is not immediately masterpiece material, with it all the dots that ensure that it has become a smooth, captivating and tight film.

Pretty entertaining film with a lot of nice things, but the film also lacks something.

For example, the gruesome history and atrocities between black and white in South Africa are played very nicely. This has had a certain effect on all the protagonists and history. One has even more trouble with his past than the other. The plot with the drugs and the 'intended' side effects is in itself not very new, but in itself it was successful. Furthermore, the violence like on the beach is of a wonderfully brutal directness, it just had something may be more. The acting is also more than fine, like Whitaker. But the show is stolen by Bloom, partly because of the amazing characters he plays. Truly a wonderfully thick-wood-saw-one-plank type. Bloom, who stands out to me as the pretty boy who often goes for the easy role such as the Pirates or LOTR series. Not that those roles are badass, but they are not real character roles. Truly wonderful role, and played with verve. More of this.

Back to the movies. Tension builds, great climax and ending. However, the film lacks something that makes it not quite top notch. Perhaps something more could have been played with with the misery in the slums.

Not out of the ordinary, but ultimately a great entertaining thriller.
