There is a lid for every pot. And every pot has a different pot – Liberace must have known it.

It is striking to place the real piano virtuoso (YouTube-wise) next to the imitation, whereby it must be said that Michael Douglas seems to deliver a hyperbolic rendition that apparently has a great deal of reality attached to it. It is also fascinating to see that Steven Soderbergh begins to mess with the viewer's moral register. Once Damon changes from innocent kid to aggressive drug addict, Douglas' character takes on more humanity.

Yet the emphasis in 'Behind the Candelabra' is too one-sided on sexuality, financial excesses and Liberace's ambiguous relationship with his loved ones. Who was he as a musician? How seriously did he take his own artistry? How did homophobic America view this man? How was he received in Europe?

Well, it's a good movie, but it could have been more.

Excellent film about the extravagant entertainer Liberace who starts a relationship with a younger man. The course of this love affair, which culminates in a claim for damages, is portrayed credibly and fascinatingly. Matt Damon and Michael Douglas contribute a lot to this (especially the latter seems to enjoy his role. Nicely dressed too.
