What a thick soundtrack can do for your film.. Quiet Ones excels at the moments where the sound design predominates and surprisingly leaves many of its peers behind. The child that screams the loudest gets all the attention; Pogue is the quiet little man at the back of the class here, who can do better, but doesn't show off. Wonderfully dosed, with a classic approach and with its own sound / face. Unexpectedly good.

Good structure, moderate pay-off.

The Quiet Ones is not innovative in any way. It is a typical exorcist film, with some found footage edited in between. However, the build-up is fine: the creepy location and some strong sound effects quickly create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Scares are well dosed; something that is often over-the-top in many American counterparts.

But towards the finale, the film falters. Lots of occult talk and of course an intrigue, as is often the case with Hammer films. In the end it lacks tension and the film goes out like a candle. More could have been done with this. The acting was positive, especially from the girl. She portrays a good creepy type, with those dark hollow eyes.

All in all, the modern Hammer doesn't impress me for the time being. 2.5*

Half.

Film in which there was actually more to experience than I could have imagined. Because of the overwhelmingly negative impression the film left behind as well as a listing in the list of films with the most scares, I mainly expected it to be an easy appetizer. However, it turned out to be a bit more complex than just that.

Yet it remains a horror film that finds its roots in the classics, because both the structure and the elaboration of the concept remain predictable. The themes dealt with in this film have been done before, much more often, before and better. However, that should not immediately spoil the fun of this film, but fun is precisely what is missing here. The film has been stripped of all energy from the direction.

A camera that doesn't really swing along with the story and a pace that is a bit too unbalanced to work. The final, which should have been much stronger, is certainly disappointing. Furthermore, it is audiovisually consistent. Great cinematography, even better sound indeed. The ominous growl of the sound montage creates an unpleasant and effective atmosphere. Unfortunately, the film uses it too little to its advantage.

In the end it is quality and it definitely looks good. Without a doubt I could easily look at it, but what keeps the grade from a pass is the acting itself. Cooke just doesn't belong in a movie like this and Claflin is invisible. Harris is a bit more impressive, but his role restricts him in every way of his freedom when it comes to acting. Overall consistent, but disappointing in terms of content. Always a pity.
